How do blueprints and components work in Rust?

Since last nights update in devblog 180 on October 5th, 2017, surviving works a lot different than before. Workbenches, blueprints, tiers 1 till 3… how do they work?

We already knew blueprints from some time ago. Last year, even before XP leveling was added (and removed again), blueprints were already in-game. After XP leveling, components came to life, but things were really easy. Servers were almost full for 1 or 2 days, but it was so easy to raid and fight, that people left the servers. Seeing this as a big game changer, some things need explanation.

Most of the items (except for some basic fight and build tools) are not craftable at first. You need to ‘know’ them before you can make them. In this example, we take the most wanted Assault Rifle, also known as AK. Before you can craft it, you need to have it. Items like the AK can be found in lootboxes at radtowns. Their health is really low, so using it is not recommended. You’d rather ‘learn’ how to craft it.

To learn how to build the AK, you need to create a blueprint in a research table. You can craft the research table with 200 metal frags and 75 scrap. Put the AK in the research table and add the right amount of scrap (no % chance, just one fixed price). In case of an AK, you need 750 scrap. Research the AK and you will have a blueprint. Copy the blueprint to your inventory, click it and click ‘Learn blueprint’. You now know how to craft an AK forever.

However, in order to craft an AK, you need the components for it. In case of the AK, you need 50 HQ metal, 200 wood, 1 rifle body and 4 metal springs. Now you have the items, you’re still not quite ready. You need a work bench to craft the item (or you need to be close to one). In order to craft an AK in a workbench, you need Work Bench Level 3. The thing is, before you can get Level (or Tier) 3, you need 1 and 2. Don’t worry, you can just craft it. The prices are:

Work Bench Level 1: 500 wood, 100 metal frags, 50 scrap
Work Bench Level 2: Work Bench Level 1, 500 metal frags, 20 HQ metal, 500 scrap
Work Bench Level 3: Work Bench Level 2, 1000 metal frags, 100 HQ metal, 1250 scrap

To use a Work Bench, you need to be ‘in the area’ of it. So you don’t necessarily need to create one, maybe use the one of your neighbours. So, to craft an AK, get the components, stay next to Work Bench Level 3 and just craft it like you normally would.

NOTE: you COULD use the AK directly out of the lootbox, however the health is very low and you can’t repair it that easily.
