Changes to twig-building, furnaces and overall progression

Some interesting (and game-changing) changes are coming to us in the next update (and couple of weeks). Let’s start first with the hair and player models. The changes were added a couple of weeks ago, but were removed at the last moment due to unforeseen issues. There is still big progress on this, but it doesn’t seem we’ll be seeing hair on our top and lower half of our bodies. This could change in a couple of hours, so be sure to stay in contact.

What will be in tonight are a couple of big changes. It seems like building twigs in cupboard protected places has been changed. Players will now be able to only place twig foundations and floors in blocked areas, together with ladders. However, twig stairs and walls are now blocked in those areas and crafting ladders take 3 feet of rope now.

This change makes high external walls and compounds a little more ‘secure’. You can still ladder over a wall, but it takes more rope and you will get more damage from the barbed wire above it. Something you won’t see as an issue on a modded server, but can be a bit harder on vanilla or our ‘almost vanilla’ servers.

And:
Now you will also have a map by default. So no sharing and trading maps with your bases or high power loot pointed out. Simply press ‘g’ and the map appears.

Furthermore, smaller changes have been made which involves gameplay significantly: you can now pickup furnaces, storage boxes and fridges when they are empty and you have your hammer equipped. Cupboard shelves can be placed over the top of existing boxes and furnaces cost 100 less wood, but you won’t get 100 wood in the furnace when you place it.

Last but not least: the high external stone gate has been edited. It has more barbed wires and it opens and closes faster.

RAM usage
Your game clients RAM usage will now show in the ‘perf’ views 5 through 8 (activated in console).

Sedan
The sedan car has had some improvements. The collision has been improved and it now has working head and brake lights. You can toggle them on and off with the ‘f’ key. However, the car can still only be spawned in by admins.

Progression progress
Helk is well underway on the new progression system. A hybrid of components and blueprints, this next evolution of progression will fundamentally shift how items are crafted and made available. Although this work is not able to be tested yet (it’s still on its own branch), we do know roughly what to expect given Helk’s commits and a chat we had.

First of all, blueprints are coming back, and will work pretty much the same as they did back in the old days: certain items can be crafted by default, other items require a blueprint to be learned before you can craft them. Each player will have their own learned blueprints for each server and they will persist across map wipes (but not server to server).

Blueprints will be obtained through research benches. You’ll need the source item and a certain amount of scrap to get a blueprint. The specifics of percentage chance and costs are still to be determined, but it looks like researching will be very similar to what it used to be – except instead of BP frags, you use scrap. It’s not clear as of yet if you’ll find blueprints around the map, or if they’ll only be obtained through research.

Oh, and you are now able to place large furnaces under an already existing floor grill!

See you tonight with the update!
